$840,000 To Fight The “Silent Epidemic”: AHRF Funds 16 Pivotal Hearing And Balance Research Projects

Summary

The American Hearing Research Foundation (AHRF) has approved 16 research grants totaling nearly $840,000 for 2026, marking a 91% increase from previous years. This expanded funding supports critical research on hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, and balance disorders, helping close the longstanding “funding gap” in auditory and vestibular science. AHRF invites supporters to join this momentum on Giving Tuesday to ensure continued progress toward new treatments and cures.

Chicago, IL – November 24, 2025 – In the spirit of Giving Tuesday and as a testament to its donors’ generosity, the American Hearing Research Foundation (AHRF) proudly announces the approval of 16 research grants totaling nearly $840,000 for the 2026 funding cycle.

The 2026 funding is a 91% increase over previous years and exemplifies our commitment to fuel groundbreaking discoveries and enable innovative scientists to push the boundaries of what is possible. These funds bring renewed hope to millions worldwide affected by debilitating conditions such as hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, and related balance disorders.

This record increase in funding is urgently needed, as hearing and balance research traditionally receives only a small fraction of the federal funding allocated to other chronic conditions, creating a significant “funding gap.” AHRF’s grants provide essential seed money that allows early-career investigators to pursue novel, high-risk, high-reward ideas. Without this vital initial investment, projects risk being delayed or abandoned, threatening the pipeline of talent and innovation needed to solve these complex health challenges.

To meet this critical need, the $840,000 in funding is strategically allocated across several grant categories to support a diverse range of high-impact projects:

  • 1 Birtman Grant – $75,000
  • 1 Richard G. Muench Chairman’s Grant – $65,000
  • 14 Discovery Grants – up to $50,000 each

This vital investment directly supports both emerging and established researchers pursuing innovative solutions to challenging auditory and vestibular disorders. Consequently, every dollar donated helps accelerate life-changing research and moves the scientific community closer to crucial treatments and, ultimately, cures.

As Giving Tuesday approaches, AHRF invites the public to be part of this significant momentum. Donations enable the continuation and expansion of this vital research, supporting the next generation of scientific discovery. Donate Today: https://www.american-hearing.org/donate/
